NYT: "A Trial Run for School Standards That Encourage Deeper Thought" (Fernanda Santos)

"The standards are believed to encourage deeper thought among students, and more emphasis on persuasion and analysis. However, questions remain concerning the implementation of the new standards, including how much oversight will be given to ensure they are followed."

Report on the results of the most recent Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) tests. PISA provides a detailed assessment and comparison of what 15 year-old students in 74 education systems have learned and how well they can apply knowledge.

"PISA results for U.S. students fell around the OECD average range, as they have for the past decade, with scores around the average for reading and science and below average in mathematics. [...] The U.S. recovered quickly from the Sputnik setback... Any nation that can successfully regain its leadership position that dramatically can certainly find it within its power to improve its educational system to make it more competitive with the world’s best-performing countries today.
